My Love-Hate Relationship With Jack Edwards

Jack Edwards is known to be one of the most colourful play-by-play guys in the NHL for NESN up in Boston. He is as big a homer as it gets and clearly cheers for his team during games. Not everyone likes this (especially people in Montreal).

Over the past few years he's come up with memorable lines that have definitely rattled the cage. Personally, I've had mixed feelings on the man.

One night he'd have me in stitches with his jokes and one-liners.
Other nights he'd have me screaming at my TV, cursing his name.

I've never felt more bipolar in my life than I did when watching the following video of Edward's greatest calls. It seemed I'd switch off after every clip, laughing and getting pissed off. But that seems to be the affect Edwards has on people outside of Boston:
As much as I laughed at his yapping at 0:35, I was just as pissed off when he called Benoit Pouliot a chump at 3:29. (Pouliot is now, ironically, a member of those Bruins)

There's no doubt in my mind that Jack Edwards loves what he does and I respect him for that.

The only major problems that I have with him, though, is when he 1) disgraces the name of a hockey player 2) is a complete hypocrite with the Boston fans 3) is a homer during a time of an injury or illegal check

Yes, I know that he is a homer (note: a homer means a home announcer who calls the game with a biased spin for his team) and that we expect him to favour the Bruins. But those 3 things, I think we can all agree, is something that crosses the line just a bit.

A prime example would be in the 2011 Quarterfinals with Montreal when Jeff Halpern was brutally hit to the head on an extremely dirty play by Andrew Ference and all Edwards is concerned about is that quiet room rule that NOBODY in the NHL kept. A player was seriously injured by a cheapshot and Edwards had to put a spin on it just to take the bad light from Boston and put it on Montreal.

It'd be a sin for me not to discuss one of his most famous lines:
GET UP!
I used to cringe every time I watched this. An announcer completely losing his cool during a broadcast.
But over time I realised that this is who Jack Edwards is and that's something we should be okay with. In all actuality, Hamrlik was probably trying to draw a call on that play.
The one thing I dislike a lot though, is Edwards' hate for diving.
Listen, we all hate diving. But if you're going to  dislike players and teams for diving...well, um...I hate to break it to you Jack, but I spy a team with a "B" on their chest, diving quite a bit.

It's easy to hate on the Bruins and Boston. Heck, one of my most popular posts ever is one bashing the team and the fans. But for some reason, Jack Edwards has grown on me and I like him now quite a bit. From his freakishly awesome, creative rant about Montreal to his humourous participation in a Bruins commercial. And yes, he can overreact along with Chara about a seemingly innocuous shoulder tap, but we still love him anyway (and yes, he's a crazily accurate psychic)

One last video I want to show comes from this season. The Bruins came back from down 2 goals in the third and tie the game against the Rangers. And here we see Jack Edwards in a beautiful moment of pure joy and happiness, something that showcases his love for the sport of hockey.

Now if only we can knock some sense into the Commentator, Andy Brickley...
