We talked here about the crazy game 1 ending. After a long night of great scoring chances and even better goaltending, the Canucks ended it with 18 seconds left in the game. So after the great game 1, how does game 2 stump it? Will it be another late goal?
No. It will be an early goal.
After a great back and forth game that wound up in overtime, Alex Burrows took just 11 seconds to put home the winner.
This is NOT the quickest. SCF overtime goal, however. In 1986 Brian Skrudland scored just 9 seconds into overtime to help Montreal defeat Calgary in game 2.
Most people could have missed this because of the quick finnish (flash). I will say straight out though that I did not miss it. I was watching "Gran Torino" on FX and it went to commercial JUST as overtime was starting so I saw the goal (just a note, this movie is not as good in the TV censored version.) If you haven't seen it, here it is:

Now people right off the bat criticized Thomas for playing it so badly. He was very impatient and tried challenging Burrows by going right out of the net leaving the other side wide open for the wrap around. Well we talked here about Thomas' style of play and how it works. Well this is how he is. Take it or leave it. Would a normal, orthodox goalie have given up that goal to Burrows? No probably not. But they also wouldn't make the same saves Thomas does.
Also, Chara seemed a little too passive for a captain of a team in the Stanley Cup Finals in overtime. He should have at least tried to tackle him or hook him or done anything to not allow Burrows to score. He should have risked taking a penalty rather than allowing him to score. It might be fatigue though for Chara who has had to do a lot of work in the past 2 games. He played just about half the game the past 2 nights and has had to do a lot of work in the corners. But unacceptable if you want to win the cup.
On this site I've talked at length about the role of hockey gods. How in game 7 against the Lightning the Bruins were handed the victory by them. Tonight Boston fans are probably saying the same thing although they must have forgotten about what happened last week with Horton. Alex Burrows should have been suspended for tonights game because of the bighting incident but to the chagrin of many Bruins fans, was not. Well I think this is another one of those signs from the hockey gods that they are still watching over us. They paid back the Bruins for getting away with their incident. I would have been able to write this even if Burrows hadn't scored in overtime. He scored the first goal of the game also. And this is something that differentiates our sport from others. This "mystical being" that affects our sport and makes it all the more exciting to watch.
Just some random notes:
- When asked if he felt he answered the critics with his goal, 43 year old Mark Recchi said "The critics can kiss my ass." Way to go Mark!
- The green men were entertaining again. They tweeted a few times during the game:
They also did this:
and had a few more props like these:
These guys have been a great story for Vancouver and the NHL this post season and are still entertaining all of us. No word yet on whether they're making the trip to Boston but I'll keep you notified.
- Yes Boston did score a power play goal tonight. This gives them 6 powerplay goals in 70 chances in the playoffs, only 8.6%. Even worse, they are tied with Montreal, Chicago and Pheonix with 6 powerplay goals and all those teams lost in the first round! PHEONIX HAD 6 IN 4 GAMES! Unbelievable. And when someone asked me how Boston DID manage to score on the powerplay tonight I said, "Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then."
- MOMENT OF THE NIGHT BY FAR was made by Maxim Lapierre. I mentioned the bighting incident with Burrows on Patrice Bergeron. Well Lapierre couldn't help but mock him. Here's the video courtesy of Wyshynski:
Genius. Pure Genius. Personally couldn't stop laughing when I saw this. Love the guy now more than ever.
Now one question left:
HOW DOES GAME 3 TOP THIS??????
